## Protection is only half the equation

Your business has antivirus software. Your team uses passwords and multifactor authentication. You may even have a firewall, email filtering and cybersecurity training.

But here's the question that matters most:

**If your business was hit by a cyberattack tomorrow morning, how quickly could your team get back to work?**

For many businesses, the honest answer is "we're not sure." And that uncertainty is expensive. Statistics Canada found that about 1 in 6 Canadian businesses were affected by a cyber incident in 2023, and total spending on recovery doubled to about $1.2 billion. Fewer businesses are being hit, but the ones that are hit are paying far more to clean up.

At Attitude IT, we believe cybersecurity isn't just about stopping an attack. It's about making sure your business keeps running, and recovers quickly, when something goes wrong. That's how we build protection for every client: **prevent, detect, respond and recover.**

## Where should businesses invest first?

### 1. Backups you can actually recover from

**The business risk:** Losing access to critical files, applications or devices, whether from ransomware, hardware failure, a lost laptop or simple human error.

**What matters:** Reliable backups, at least one protected copy that attackers can't reach, and regular restore testing. A backup you've never restored from isn't a plan. It's a guess.

**How Attitude IT protects you:**

- **Managed backup and disaster recovery** for your server and file storage, including full recovery of your server in the event of a complete disaster
- **Workstation backups** that protect each laptop and desktop, including OneDrive, so a failed or lost device doesn't mean lost work
- **Backup monitoring** by our team, so a failed backup gets fixed before you ever need it
- **Recovery planning** that sets out what gets restored first and how long it should take

### 2. Identity and access protection

**The business risk:** Someone gaining access to your email, files or systems with stolen login details, or a former employee who still has access.

**What matters:** MFA, secure remote access, the right permissions for each role, and onboarding and offboarding that actually happen.

**How Attitude IT protects you:**

- **Conditional Access and MFA** in Microsoft 365, so a stolen password alone isn't enough to sign in
- **Secure Connect**, part of the Attitude IT app, which gives your team safe remote access to company resources wherever they work
- **Admin access reviews** that take the "master keys" off everyday accounts
- **Zero Trust software approvals**, so only approved applications can run on company computers
- **Onboarding and offboarding** handled by our helpdesk, so access starts and ends exactly when it should

### 3. Monitoring and incident response

**The business risk:** An attack going unnoticed for days or weeks, or being noticed with no one ready to act.

**What matters:** Around-the-clock monitoring, endpoint detection and response, and a clear plan for what happens next.

**How Attitude IT protects you:**

- **24/7/365 monitoring** of your network, servers and critical devices by our Network Operations Centre
- **Endpoint detection and response (EDR)** on every covered computer, plus managed detection and response for your Microsoft 365 account
- **Critical security event monitoring and anti-ransomware protection**
- **A one-hour response target** for emergencies, with after-hours emergency dispatch

### 4. Employee awareness and training

**The business risk:** A team member clicking a convincing phishing email, or not knowing how to report it.

**What matters:** Practical training, realistic phishing tests and reporting that takes one click.

**How Attitude IT protects you:**

- **Quarterly security awareness training**, with short courses and certificates for every team member
- **A Report Phishing button** in Outlook on desktop and mobile, so anything suspicious goes straight to our helpdesk for review
- **Advanced spam and phishing filtering** that stops many threats before they reach an inbox
- **Live training sessions** for teams who want to go deeper

### 5. Business continuity and recovery planning

**The business risk:** Having the technology in place but no clear plan for getting the business running again.

**What matters:** Recovery priorities, communication plans, clear responsibilities and regular testing.

**How Attitude IT protects you:**

- **Virtual CIO planning** to set recovery priorities and build your technology roadmap
- **Cybersecurity risk assessments** that identify gaps before attackers do
- **Vendor management**, including a Vendor Cybersecurity Risk Audit to check how your key suppliers protect your data
- **Compliance support** for cyber insurance applications and frameworks like NIST

## What happens when something goes wrong

Tools on a list are easy to compare. What really matters is how they work together on a bad day. Here's an example of how a common attack plays out when every layer is in place:

- **7:52 a.m.** A team member opens a convincing "invoice" email and enters their password on a fake login page.
- **Minutes later.** The attacker tries to sign in from another country. Conditional Access blocks the attempt, because sign-ins are only allowed from approved locations and devices.
- **At the same time.** Our monitoring flags the suspicious activity, and the team member uses the Report Phishing button to send the email to our helpdesk.
- **Within the hour.** Our team resets the password, signs the account out of every device, checks for hidden email forwarding rules and warns anyone else who received the same message.
- **If a device was affected.** It's isolated from the network, cleaned or restored from backup, and returned to the team member.
- **Afterwards.** We document what happened, explain it in plain language, and recommend any changes to stop it from happening again.

The result: a stressful morning instead of a lost week. That's the difference between having security tools and having a plan.

## Are you spending money in the right places?

More technology doesn't always mean better protection. A business can pay for several security subscriptions and still have major gaps in its recovery plan, or pay twice for features it already has.

Before adding another product, ask:

- Are we getting full value from the technology we already pay for?
- Are our most important business systems protected?
- Have we tested our backups and recovery procedures recently?
- Do our employees know exactly what to do during an incident?
- Which technology failure would cause the greatest disruption?

**The goal isn't to spend more. It's to spend where it matters.** Often, cutting unused licences and overlapping tools frees up the budget for the protections that are missing.

## Different businesses, different priorities

| Industry | What matters most | How we help |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manufacturing | Production continuity, network reliability and equipment connectivity | Monitored networks, server recovery planning and reliable Wi-Fi across the floor |
| Accounting and professional services | Client confidentiality, application availability and reliable backups | Conditional Access, encrypted backups and support for compliance requirements |
| Construction | Secure access between job sites and the office, mobile devices and document sharing | Secure Connect remote access, mobile security and organized cloud file sharing |

Every business has different risks, which is why your cybersecurity investments should match the way your business actually operates.

## Our philosophy at Attitude IT

We believe technology should help businesses move forward with confidence. That means:

- **Recommending what makes sense** for your business, not selling tools you don't need
- **Protecting the systems your team relies on** every day
- **Planning for the unexpected**, so a bad day doesn't become a bad month
- **Being there when it counts**, with a live person answering your call during business hours and emergency support after hours

Before investing in any new cybersecurity tool, we ask one simple question:

**Will this help prevent a disruption, reduce its impact or help us recover faster?**

If the answer is no, it's probably not the right place for your budget.

## Frequently asked questions

**We already have antivirus. Isn't that enough?**

Antivirus is a good start, but most attacks today target accounts, email and people, not just devices. Real protection layers monitoring, access controls, training and tested backups together.

**How do we know if our backups actually work?**

The only way to know is to test a restore. If your current provider can't show you a recent successful restore, that's worth asking about.

**What happens if something happens after hours?**

Our monitoring runs 24/7/365, and after-hours calls are routed to emergency dispatch, so urgent issues don't wait until morning.

**Can you help with our cyber insurance application?**

Yes. Insurers increasingly ask about MFA, backups, monitoring and training. We help clients document their controls and close any gaps.

## Let's make sure your business is prepared

Not sure whether your current technology is protecting what matters most? Attitude IT helps Ontario businesses review their technology, find the gaps and prioritize the improvements that make the biggest difference.

**Book a complimentary technology planning conversation.** We'll talk about your business, your priorities and what you need to keep running.
