Planning to unplug this long weekend? So should your business, but not your cybersecurity.
Long weekends are made for camping trips, family barbecues, cottage weekends, and taking a well-earned break. Unfortunately, cybercriminals don't take holidays.
In fact, holiday weekends can be one of the busiest times for cyberattacks. With fewer employees monitoring inboxes, delayed responses, and quieter offices, attackers often see an opportunity to target businesses.
The good news? A few simple steps before you head out the door can make a big difference.
It sounds simple, but it happens more often than you'd think.
Before you leave, lock your computer and make sure sensitive documents aren't left open on your screen.
Windows Shortcut: Windows + L
It takes one second and protects your information if someone accesses your workspace.
It's tempting to clear your inbox before heading out, but that's exactly what cybercriminals count on.
Unexpected invoices.
Package notifications.
Urgent payment requests.
Shared documents.
If something feels rushed or out of the ordinary, wait until you're back—or verify it with the sender before clicking.
Remember:
Urgency is one of a hacker's favourite tools.
If your computer has been asking to restart for updates, don't keep clicking "Later."
Restarting before the weekend allows security updates to install while you're away so your device is protected when you return.
If you still have accounts without Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), now is a great time to fix that.
Email.
Microsoft 365.
Banking.
Payroll.
Cloud storage.
A second layer of protection can stop someone from accessing your accounts—even if they know your password.
Heading to the cottage or travelling this weekend?
Avoid accessing sensitive business information over public Wi-Fi whenever possible.
If you need to work remotely, use a secure VPN or your organization's approved remote access solution.
A clean desk is more than good housekeeping.
Before you leave:
Physical security is still part of cybersecurity.
Burnout is a security risk too.
When employees are tired or distracted, mistakes happen.
Take the break.
Recharge.
Spend time with family and friends.
Your inbox will still be there on Tuesday.
From everyone at Attitude IT, we hope you enjoy a relaxing and well-deserved long weekend.
